Selected programs of ensemble mosaik:
visible music concert series 2010/2011
Every concert experience is shaped by the concentrated presence of musicians, their physical effort in producing the sounds, the instruments, as well as the actual physical space. The live experience of music is perceived within a concrete visual context. The sound sources are visibly comprehensible, the instruments, gestures and mimic of the musicians are intimately connected to the listening experience. At a concert, the listener can also “listen with his eyes”.
The compositions performed as part of ensemble mosaik’s five-part concert series “visible music” all attach importance to the visual context of live musical performance and consciously factor it into the compositional process. As such, each concert will open up a special “perspective” on music for the listener. Performance (1) and homemade instruments (2) are the themes of the first two concerts; following these are programs that deal with “found sound” (3), concerts that include light, image or video (4), or address the space and audience (5). Whatever extends beyond the acoustic dimension in these productions will be guided by professionals: for each concert, a different director has been invited to shape the visual aspect of the works being performed.
The concerts of ensemble mosaik’s “visual music” are in fact a research into the art form of the concert itself. The innovative approach of the concert series not only lies in its programmatic orientation and collaboration with young and inventive composers, but in posing the question of how innovative compositions can be presented within a framework that is more than just a traditional, unquestioned ritual. The aim, therefore, is to present music as it is: an exciting experience.
