After Lancelot's Spiegel (2001, world premiere 2003 Steirischer Herbst Graz) and Imitation of Life (2004, world premiere 2005 state opera Hamburg, and Bregenz Festival), Galaxy Hotel [play for music] is the third music theatre by the composer Burkhard Friedrich.
Burkhard Friedrich's compositions are highly affected by concepts of music theatre which question the well know genres chamber opera/opera/musical theatre and put them in new contexts. The listener becomes part of the performance by including musically the performance space by complex audio-settings as quadrophony, rotating sounds and produced material which is inversely to the live-material. Burkhard Friedrich uses live-electronic, video, light and a realtime camera to create for the audience a space of identification and projections.
With the directors Herbordt/Mohren, the set designers Hannes Hartmann and Leonie Mohr and the video artist Timo Schierhorn, soniq performing arts created a leading team which adopts the cross-genre aproach of Galaxy Hotel [play for music] as its own tampering with boundaries of theatre.
